How does this counselling work?

Many people feel overwhelmed with the emotions, responsibilities and challenges of supporting someone with dementia.  My initial goal when I meet with you is to listen to your situation with empathy and understanding. Once you have had the opportunity to share your story, along with the associated feelings and concerns; your goals from the counselling will determine the approach we take.

You might need:

  • an opportunity to share your sadness, frustration, resentment, guilt and grief
  • strategies to manage your own feelings and emotions when they become overwhelming
  • ways to help your person come to terms with a recent dementia diagnosis
  • practical support to access resources for your person living with dementia
  • options to find time out for yourself in order to relax and recharge
  • communication strategies to manage the relationship with the person living with dementia
  • ways to talk with other family members or friends in relation to supporting the person with dementia
  • to discuss when and how to look for a dementia unit or rest home for your person with dementia and manage the associated emotions around that decision

Above all I aim to provide you with the opportunity to share your experiences so that together we can find ways to help you navigate the future.
